As part of its growth strategy, Piab has expanded through the acquisition of multiple brands, forming the Piab Group which currently consists of 10 distinct brands. Each entity brings unique capabilities but also presents challenges when it comes to digital infrastructure, governance, and operational consistency. When Piab came to Avensia, their vision was to implement a unified tech stack that would support shared product data, enable e-commerce capabilities where relevant, and offer a consistent digital experience across markets. So that's what we did.

The challenge Navigating Complexity Across Brands

As new companies successively joined the group, so did a wide range of systems, platforms, and processes. Each brand had its own way of working, its own infrastructure, and its own tech stack – many of which were outdated or incompatible with others. Over time, the digital ecosystem became increasingly fragmented and divisionalized, with each company operating in silos and owning its own solutions. To ensure long-term scalability and operational efficiency, Piab therefore set out to strengthen its digital landscape across all brands.

The company had relied on a custom-built solution for over 15 years. Originally designed as an internal order management system used by employees and distributors, it lacked the flexibility and modern functionality needed for e-commerce. As Piab’s focus shifted toward digital growth and operational efficiency, this solution was no longer fit for purpose.

The group’s strategy required more than just upgrades. It called for a fundamental shift toward shared governance, centralized IT, and a common digital foundation across all brands. The goal was to close legacy websites and replace outdated platforms, reducing license costs and streamlining operations in the process. The transformation would be significant, and it needed to be done in a way that would allow for continuous growth through future acquisitions. The company turned to Avensia to help define and execute a strategy for combining its technology landscape, starting with a robust architecture and ending with a scalable solution for the entire group.

It has been great to work with Avensia. We are very happy with their processes, leadership and quality.

The solution

A Platform for Continuous Expansion

Piab’s transformation began with two critical components already in place: the Optimizely platform and Inriver PIM. However, these had previously been implemented only for the core Piab brand and were not structured to support a multi-brand environment or group-wide governance.

To meet the needs of a growing group, the solution was reimagined and rebuilt with a scalable architecture:

  1. Multisite Platform: Built on Optimizely Cloud and Avensia Nitro, the platform now supports both e-commerce and content-rich sites. Brands can be onboarded one by one while maintaining a consistent look and feel.
  2. Middleware Layer: Avensia developed a unique and powerful integration layer using Azure Integration Services. This middleware consolidated several separate ERP systems into a single unified flow, allowing shared access to product data across all brands.
  3. Centralized Product Information: With Inriver PIM already in place, Avensia supported the integration and onboarding of multiple brands into the same product information management ecosystem.

This strategic foundation allowed Piab to migrate legacy systems gradually, without disruption, while ensuring that every new addition strengthened the group’s digital capabilities.

The results

Unlocking Group-Wide Synergies

The new solution marks a significant shift for Piab Group. By gradually moving all brands into a shared digital ecosystem, the company is reducing complexity, simplifying governance, and accelerating digital transformation.

Internally, when having the same tech stack, we can keep the same templates and e-commerce for all brands, which saves a lot of resources going forward.

With the centralized tech stack, Piab can now develop functionality once and make it available across all brands, boosting efficiency and lowering total cost of ownership. The new middleware streamlines data exchange across ERP systems, while the consolidated PIM ensures consistent product information group-wide.

In addition, the unified approach simplifies onboarding of newly acquired companies. Instead of inheriting multiple legacy sites and outdated systems, Piab can transition each brand into a shared environment with the same structure, templates, and customer experience design, ensuring consistency and alignment across the group.

Future Work

The project is ongoing, with additional brands within the Piab Group currently being prepared for onboarding to the platform. As each company transitions from legacy systems to the shared digital ecosystem, small adjustments are made to accommodate brand-specific needs without compromising the consistency and scalability of the core architecture.

Newly acquired companies are also integrated into the multisite solution as part of the group’s post-acquisition process. The aim is to give every brand the same look and feel and user experience, further strengthening Piab’s position as a unified and digitally mature organization.

With every step forward the platform evolves, supporting Piab’s global ambitions and ensuring that the entire group benefits from continuous improvements, shared functionality, and long-term digital sustainability.
